This 2024 seasons prizegiving was held on the 10th of December and hosted at the Burnside Rugby Football Clubrooms at Burnside Park. It was well attended with a packed room and the committee appreciated the attendance of players, parents, coaches and administrators.
We would like to acknowledge the support of sponsor’s for year Blackwells Mazda, Cricket Express, Kookaburra and Robbie’s Riccarton.
Thanks to Burnside High School for the use of their van and growth of cricket at that school, both the two cricket clubs Burnside-West Christchurch University CC and Merivale-Papanui CC who without access to their training facilities there would be no youth cricket program. Christchurch Metro Cricket we unable to attend this year, we acknowledge the work they do for youth cricket. Thanks also to Mike Harvey, Tim Murdoch and Keryn Ambler at CMCA for their work this year.
Elise Williams and Dhanuja Delapolage were on hand to take the photos.
We are very fortunate to have tight group of volunteers who have help to run North-West Youth Cricket and none more than Mike Roan who organised and was the emcee on the night. Mike does an amazing job behind the scenes and we are very grateful to have him involved in Youth Cricket.
Our first special guest on the night was John Mitchell, retired divisional principal at Burnside High School and first president of The Willow’s Cricket Club. John was able to present the John Mitchell Cup for the most outstanding 1st XI Player to Brayden McLeod.
The second special guest was Jon Preston, All Black #913, who in addition to rugby also played age group representative cricket at NZ level and played for Canterbury ‘A’ before having to commit to rugby. Jon’s connection was through his playing days at Burnside-West Christchurch University CC and a member of Burnside RFC – so he felt at home on podium. Thanks JP for giving up your time to attend the prizegiving.
We acknowledge the work of two parents, Grant MacLennan and Anak Lumb who have finished their involvement in the committee.
Mike Roan congratulated the NWYC 1st XI for winning the 1st XI Cup Grade in Term 1, and the 3rd XI Green side on winning the 2nd Grade competition they were in. Both important successes to be celebrated.
This first award for the night was the Kookaburra and Cricket Express Tom Latham Scholarship which is an award open for nominations and this year it was a tight decision that went to Jasper Welford. Congratulations Jasper and this is $1000.00 Kookaburra Gear award.
We ran through the Team Awards with each coach / manager who spoke about the season. It is never easy having to stand up and talk through the season and help to present the awards. We then ran through the club awards and presented both Junior and Senior Awards. Congratulations to all our award winners.
