St Kevins College Junior 1st XI Festival December 2025

In our first game against John McGlashan College (JMC) we batted first, scoring 139.  Batting highlights included 23 from Tom and 22 not out from Zorawar.  Linuka and James W also batted well.  Despite JMC getting the runs within 22  overs, we bowled well, with some fiery fast bowling from  Alex in particular.

Our second game against Trinity College was delayed by bad weather.  A shortened 20/20 game was played. Batting first, Trinity scored 100 for 7, with all our players bowling well.  Unfortunately, we were bowled out for 26 on a wicket taking a lot of turn.  Despite this, Gurshan batted very well against the fast bowlers and spinners.

The last game against  Waitaki Boys High (WBH) went right down to the last over.  WBH batted first, scoring 162. Our innings got  off to a rocky start but excellent batting by Tom with 41 and Lachy 54 not out nearly getting us there, just falling 7 runs short of winning the game.

Despite not winning a game, all the boys had the opportunity to bat and bowl in each game against different opposition and different grass pitches.  James Q and Alex captained the side very ably.  Fin, Mason, Abhay, Lachy, Zorawar, Tom and Alex all bowled with pace and accuracy.   Linuka, Dihela and James Q also bowled their medium pacers well on the slower wickets.  Our only spinner was Gurshan, who bowled very tidily. James W completed his wicketkeeping very well, spending most of his time standing right up to the stumps on the slower wickets. Although the batting was a bit challenging, this experience will contribute to the development of the boys’ game.

Beyond the facts and figures, all the boys behaved well on and off the field.  Needless to say, there was of course lots of noise, laughter and hijinks from the boys!

I wish to thank Anna and Luke for their efforts as parent help.  St Kevins provided great facilities  and thanks goes to them as well.  I also would like to thank Burnside High School for the loan of the van.  A special thanks goes to the Northwest Committee for helping me organise the trip, especially Alix.
